A Night OF Soulful Jazz at Cyberjaya!

Courtesy of Vivian Chuah

This time around SasaJ has decided to dive into the deeper end of the music genre, Jazz music. Approached by friends in ICOM (International College of Music) and being new to this genre she decided to perform alternative music styles besides POP.

[ Watch All OUR Videos Below ]

Soul music was her first choice, being made very popular now by artist like Adele singing rolling in the deep. Backed up on keyboards by Khalil Lim from FrequenC, SasaJ sings her own acoustic version of “Someone Like You” and “Turning Tables”.

Then she introduces the rest of the FrequenC band members by performing Valentine.

SasaJ then ends her day singing a duet with Kenneth Cheong. This particular song was recently made popular by Nelly Furtado and Michael BublĂ©Quando, Quando, Quando” this Italian pop song from the 1962 is a remake and has been given a Jazzy zing to it. The word “Quando” actually means “When” translated to the English language.

There were other amazing Jazz and Alternative performances that blew us away that night. This one below was an impromptu performance by Nik Azmi and the FIELDPLAYERS band called Gubahanku.

It was an amazing night of soulful performances at PRIMA AVENUE, an open air stage with an attached café/Bistro/Food Court. We did not expect to be entertained till the early hours of the next morning. So we all went home with a wide grin on our faces.

2011 Inter-Club Champion

Inter-Club Karaoke Competition 2011 / Venue: KGNS Dewan Tunku / Date: 4th June 2011

Singing “Dipersimpangan Dilema”, SasaJ performed with zero expectations of attaining the title of youngest inter-club karaoke champion. Indeed she was shocked when she was handed the trophy that night.

SasaJ and her RSC team was also awarded the championship that night. She was later trilled to hear one of the judge’s comment that if there was anyone here with a future in the recording business it would be her.

SasaJ Winning at a RSC K-Competition!

It was a Friday night as we jumped into my 20 year old, gangster looking proton saga and made our way to the Royal Selangor Club (RSC) located in the heart of (Kuala Lumpur) KL town.
It’s at Jalan Raja facing the infamous Dataran Merdeka for those of you who rarely come to KL.

And as usual, KL roads was jammed up to Kepong! Not really, but it felt like that. So when we reached the parking lot we were all hungry and a little agitated. While trying to turn into the underground public parking lot a security guard stopped us to ask us what was our purpose of our heading. Naturally we were a little pissed and Michelle who was riding shotgun informed the very dim enforcer of the law then if we were pulling into a parking lot, it would be because we wanted to park.

Needless to say we made it in time for the event, which was the 2011 RSC Karaoke competition. SasaJ arrived ahead of us and was all pumped up and ready to perform. There were 18 contestants this year for the solo title and ironically enough SasaJ was contestant number 18. At the end of the competition, 5 singers were chosen to represent the club at the inter club Karaoke competition.
And YES! SasaJ was one of the 5.

SasaJ (Melissa Wang) sang Di Persimpangan Dliema, the only Malay number of that night. She was so in her element that I could see the judges on my right whispering in excitement to each other as they listen and enjoyed her performance.

SasaJ was handed the 1st runner up title, which is a fancy way of saying 2nd placing in my opinion. But even before she was given the title everyone including some of the contestants was congratulating her for the winning title. It felt as if she was too young to out shine the other regular or should I say very very seasoned contestants.

I could be wrong but I don't think so... but then again I’m F#©%$-Ing bias
SO YOU be the judge… and Please Leave a Comment, THX…

A One Take Thingy

SasaJ singing I’ll Stand By You all in one take (Non-Stop).

Though we did shoot 4 different angles with this song but she sang all of them without me stopping the camera. At the end of the day I just blended the best shots I had and tweaked the colours to give it a more moody look.

I placed a small fan right under her and had to switch the velocity and the angle in between the live recordings to give her hair some movement. She had to control her laughter throughout the recording looking at me trying to monitor the sound, video and small fan all at the same time.

Orientation Night

It was orientation night for the 2011 January intake and Sasa J wanted to perform something different besides the required theme of the event, which was football. Being bold and tenacious she picked an upbeat Country/POP song called Cowboy Casanova by Carrie Underwood.

But as she sang confidently in front of her freshmen, the soundman ran into some major technical problems and we lost her minus one backing. Being the young professional she is and wanting to please the crowd Sasa J sang without her AudioCD backing and the crowd loved it.

She then teamed up with Klex an amazing young and talented guitarist for an acoustic duet. They sang an up tempo version of Burno Mars Grenade and the crowd went wild.

Sasa J was performing that night with a sore throat that later developed into a bad flu. Amazingly she still managed to pull of her performances that night and still sound angelic.

It was a fun filled night as you can see by the crazy videos we took of the seniors and lectures freaking out before and during the event below.

There were other performances, Gabriel & Klex sang an acoustic rendition of Katy Perry Perry’s Fireworks and then amazed us with their 3 song medley. A wonderful performance.
